The Co-op Group has been announced as the first local convenience retail supporter of Parkrun, the UK’s largest running movement.
Parkrun organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world, which are open to anyone who wants to take part.
The tie-in swill see the Co-op Group offer “healthy, affordable recipe ideas and food inspiration to participants, with a focus on meals that are simple to prepare”.
A statement from the Group said: “With shared values and a commitment to supporting communities this partnership will work to create a healthier and happier community through exercise, food and lifestyle.”
The retailer, which will also distribute healthy food products at parkrun events, launched the partnership with the help of the British Para Athletics Team.
Medallists from the squad celebrated their successes at the recent World Para Athletics Championships London 2017 by attending Parkruns across the country.
Eight events were held to launch the partnership, including runs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff and London.
Amanda Jennings, marketing communications director at the Group, said: “We are delighted to partner with Parkrun. As a retailer focused on providing for the community you only have to see a Parkrun to appreciate that this partnership is the perfect match.
“At the Co-op we are proud to champion a different way of doing business and we understand the communities we operate in. As like-minded organisations working together we share the passion of supporting and building links within the community and encouraging the nation to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
“We want consumers to not only choose the Co-op, but to assist them in building healthy, tasty meals using good quality fresh ingredients, and help to pull communities together.”
Nick Pearson, chief executive at Parkrun, said: “We are excited to welcome Co-op to the Parkrun family. More than 600 communities across the UK are coming together every weekend to support each other, enjoy the fresh air and be physically active.
“We are committed to helping Parkrunners and their communities become healthier and more and more we are conscious that healthy food choices are a critical part of health.
“We really want to help the Parkrun community understand the impact healthy food choices have on health and wellbeing. Working with the Co-op, we can ensure that we promote good value, locally available and fresh ingredients.”
The Group recently acted as national partner and official convenience retailer of the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017.
This saw the retailer feed the 4,500 volunteers, staff and athletes at the championships, and become a supporter of the British Para Athletics Team in 2017.
