The Singapore National Cooperative Federation (SNCF) has launched a photography competition for images expressing the spirit of the movement – which it lists as co-operation, self-help, equality, mutual help, and care for others.

The Co-op Hot Shots competition, now in its fifth year, calls for submissions that represent any of these values, under the overall theme of ‘Making an Impact’.

A statement on SNCF’s website reads: “Anyone can make an impact through the simplest of acts. From giving up your seat on the train to someone who needs it more, to feeding the stray cat which hasn’t had a meal, to caring for someone who is ill – it is these acts which make a world of difference in the lives of those around us.”

Photographers, both experienced and aspiring, are encouraged to submit photos based on simple acts of co-operation which make a positive impact on the world.

There are four categories for submission, with the International category the only one available to people living outside Singapore. For people in Singapore, there is a Local Open category, a School category for students, and one for submission via Instagram.

Prizes range from $1,000 for first prize in the Local Open category to $100 for third place. The top three in the International category receive Amazon vouchers for $500, $300 and $100.

This year’s judging criteria places a strong emphasis on the co-operative relevance of the photo’s message, counting for 50% of the marks. 10% is awarded for composition/arrangement; 20% for creativity; 10% for lighting; and 10% for focus/sharpness.

SNCF is the apex body of Singapore’s co-operative movement, representing 99% of its one million co-operative members. It aims to develop co-ops as sustainable enterprises that address social and economic needs and foster a more resilient society.

  • SNCF is accepting submissions until 3 September 2016, and will announce the winners after 9 September. For more details, including T&Cs, visit the Hotshots website.
