The World Credit Union Conference will feature Ian Goldin and Theresa Payton as keynote speakers. More than 1,800 credit union representatives and practitioners are expected at the conference in Belfast on 17-20 July.

Ian Goldin is director of the Oxford Martin School and professor of globalisation and development at the University of Oxford and former World Bank vice president. From 1996 to 2001 he was chief executive and managing director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and has served as an advisor to President Nelson Mandela.

Prior to this he was principal economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, and programme director at OECD Development Centre in Paris, where he directed programmes on trade, environment and sustainable development.

At the conference, he will look at the economic, demographic and technological trends that will affect the future of credit unions.

Theresa Payton
Theresa Payton

Theresa Payton will deliver a keynote speech on cyber security. Between 2006 and 2008 Ms Payton was White House chief information officer where she oversaw IT operations for the president and his 3,000 staff. Her prior positions include roles in banking technology at Bank of America and Wells Fargo. In 2008 she founded Fortalice Solutions, a security, risk and fraud consulting company that works to help organisations understand and improve their IT systems.

Ms Payton has co-written two books on cyber crime: Privacy in the Age of Big Data, and Protecting Your Internet Identity. In 2010 she was named as one of the top 25 most influential people in security by Security Magazine.

In addition to the two keynote speakers, the World Credit Union Conference will include over 25 breakout sessions on the future of financial services, membership growth, leadership and strategy, technology and security and grassroots and advocacy.

Women credit union leaders will have the opportunity to take part in the Global Women’s Leadership Forum run by the World Council’s Global Women’s Leadership Network.

Young people involved in credit unions were also able to apply to the dedicated World Council Young Credit Union People (WYCUP) programme. WYCUP is aimed at credit union professionals aged 35 and under. Five scholarship applicants will receive all expenses paid scholarship to the 2017 World Credit Union Conference in Vienna, Austria.
