Lincolnshire Co-operative has raised almost £113,000 for its 2015 charity of the year, Teenage Cancer Trust.

Through bake sales, raffles, races and events, the society’s staff and customers raised an average of £309 every day of 2015. The money will go towards helping young people suffering from cancer in the area and providing education sessions on the warning signs of cancer to local schoolchildren.

In July, the ‘get wiggy with it’ initiative saw staff wearing wigs of all sorts of different colours, raising more than £20,000 in just one day. Staff also rounded down their wages to the nearest pound, donating the remaining pence to the charity – raising over £1500.

Customers at Lincolnshire’s 215 outlets were equally involved in the fundraising process. As well as sponsoring events, and buying cakes and raffle tickets, shoppers also raised hundreds of pounds through the sale of charity air fresheners and badges in stores.

Salvation Army clothing banks in 31 food store car parks added £12,000 to the total.

A cheque for £112,890 was handed over at a ceremony in Lincolnshire Co-op’s Washingborough Food store, attended by some top fundraisers.

Eryk Gadomski, aged 18, from Newark and Chelsey Whittock, 14, from Lincoln were there to celebrate the money raised and take part in the presentation. They both benefited from the support while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Teenage Cancer Trust corporate account manager, Annmarie Carey, said: “The fantastic support we’ve had from Lincolnshire Co-op will enable us to support even more young people like Eryk and Chelsey in Lincolnshire and the surrounding areas. We can’t thank Lincolnshire Co-op’s staff and customers enough for their fundraising efforts.”

Lincolnshire Co-op’s community engagement manager Sam Turner said: “All of the hard work that my colleagues have put in has really paid off in the fantastic sum that we’ve raised for our Charity of the Year.

“Staff vote for the charity that they’d like to see us support, and they really got into the fundraising spirit this year – without their dedication and the generosity of our customers we couldn’t have raised such a brilliant total.”
