The United Nations has launched an e-discussion to engage stakeholder groups, experts, practitioners and policy makers from across the globe in a dialogue on specific aspects of implementing the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Co-operatives can get involved in shaping the agenda by taking part in the e-discussion.
This year’s theme of the International Day of Co-operatives – Co-operatives: The power to act for a sustainable future –also fits into the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In September 2015 heads of states adopted the UN’s agenda for sustainable development, committing to eradicating poverty and advancing sustainable development.
In support of the new agenda, the theme for the 2016 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) session is “Implementing the 2030 agenda” moving from commitments to results”. As the 2016 ECOSOC session is elaborating on policy and providing guidance for implementation, the international community can identify challenges to implementation and exchange lessons on early implementation efforts.
The e-discussion was designed to provide a chance for different stakeholders to formulate policy messages and recommendations.
Co-operatives can participate in the e-discussion from 29 February to 25 March. The electronic conversation focuses on three aspects: scope and implications of the 2030 agenda, national implementation and follow-up and review. More information is available on the UN’s website.
