The Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative has closed its Sheffield store due to a lack of sales. Scotland’s longest established worker co-operative, it started trading in 1977 when it opened its first shop in the capital.

Its remaining stores are in Aberdeen, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, with two in Edinburgh.

Secretary of the co-op, Ged Holmyard, said the decision to close the Sheffield store was “very difficult”.

“It is with great regret that Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative are announcing the immediate closure of our store in Sheffield. The city has proved a challenging location for us to grow sales in the last few years, particularly with the trading environment as it currently is. When an opportunity arose to exit the lease we thought it sensible to do so,” he said.

He added that Sheffield customers would be able to continue to purchase products from the co-op via its other locations and its website. “We have very much enjoyed serving the cyclists of Sheffield for the past six years and we look forward to continuing to offer an exciting and diverse range of cycling equipment and outstanding co-operative service from our other city locations and online,” he said.

Mr Holmyard added that the co-op had no further plans to open new stores in other cities. “However, if a good opportunity comes up, we would consider it,” he said.
