Tamworth Co-operative Society has become the latest UK funeral operator to sign the Fair Funerals pledge, demonstrating a commitment to providing a transparent and affordable service.

A report from Which? in 2012 highlighted how funerals can be expensive and confusing, with clear, comparable information about costs being hard to find.

In 2014, the Quaker Social Action charity, which works to combat poverty, launched the Fair Funerals pledge as part of its Fair Funerals campaign.

“We recognise many people struggle with the substantial cost of a funeral. That’s why we have signed up all eight of our funeral homes to the pledge,” said Amanda Woodward, head of Tamworth Co-operative Funeral Services.

“It is wholly compatible with our ethos of providing the very best levels of service at competitive prices. We help people find the best option for their budget.”

Ms Woodward stressed that the society operates a clear pricing policy in keeping with the spirit of the new agreement, and also offers an affordable simple funeral option. Tamworth Co-operative funeral prices are already well below the national average, she added.

Tamworth, which operates across Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the West Midlands, joins Heart of England, Lincolnshire and Scotmid co-operative societies in signing the pledge. Around ten per cent of UK funeral directors have signed up to the scheme since its launch.

In signing the Fair Funerals pledge, funeral operators commit to:

  • Recognising that funerals can be expensive and many people struggle with the cost
  • Making their most affordable funeral package highly visible to the public, including third party costs
  • Charging clear prices for goods and services so that people know what they are buying
  • Communicating prices in initial conversations while prominently displaying full price lists.
