The Co-operative Group is celebrating the Fairtrade Fortnight by doubling its support for Fairtrade projects around the world.

Last November the co-op launched an online platform that enables members and shoppers to interact directly with producers from across the globe. For every share posted to the website, www.growingstories.coop, the Co-op has been adding £1 to a special fund designed to support Fairtrade initiatives.

During the fortnight, which runs from 29 February to 13 March, the Co-operative will increase its support to £2 for every share. The website helps connect UK consumers and members of the Group with farmers from 17 producer organisations in nine different countries.

Through the online platform customers can ask producers questions about Fairtrade as well as can create and share fun messages to show their support for the Fortnight, which also get posted to the Co-op sharewall with photos.

Brad Hill, the Co-op’s Fairtrade strategic development manager, said: “Since it was launched this innovative website has raised thousands of pounds for projects in producer communities in the developing world and we are sure that our £2 donation will doubly motivated our members to engage during Fairtrade Fortnight.

“I’ve had the privilege of getting to know many producers over our 20 year partnership with Fairtrade, and it’s wonderful that there’s now a real opportunity for all our members and customers to connect with the producers who grow the Fairtrade products they love.

“Our members and customers have returned over £30m in Fairtrade premiums and now they can hear directly just what that means at an individual and community level. What better way to find out about Fairtrade impact than from the producers themselves?”
