Ray Cooke, a regular shopper at Lincolnshire Co-op’s Old Leake store, has been named as the society’s 250,000th member.

Mr Cooke from the nearby village of Wrangle has received a dividend bonus of £250, along with an extra £250 for his store’s community champion, the Bennington Community Heritage Trust.

He said: “I’d had the form before and I never filled it in, but they asked me if I had a Dividend Card every time I came in. I finally got round to it and signed up at just the right time!”

A quarter of a million members marks how far Lincolnshire Co-op has come since its beginnings in 1861, when the founders first joined together to work co-operatively to get decent food, healthcare and education.

One hundred other lucky existing members have been chosen at random to receive £25 in dividend to celebrate the membership milestone and winners will be notified on their till receipts.
