ICMIF simulation workshop promotes mutual solutions to microinsurance

Over thirty participants got a real sense of the reality of running a microinsurance operation using the unique ICMIF microinsurance simulation to translate theory into practice during a two day workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, at the beginning of November. Those taking part in the workshop included insurance regulators, researchers and staff from donor organisations as well as microinsurance practitioners. In total twenty-organisations from 16 different countries were represented.

The simulation recreates many of the key strategic and operational decisions which need to be taken in the microinsurance environment. Staged initially in 2010 as part of ICMIF’s Biennial Conference in Manchester, this second microinsurance seminar was staged immediately before the annual International Microinsurance Conference, hosted by Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network and held in Dar es Salaam from November 6-8, 2012.

The International Microinsurance Conference, now in its eighth year, this year had a strong mutual and cooperative input into the agenda, in part in recognition that 2012 has been designated the UN International Year of Cooperatives Senior figures from ICMIF members CIC (Kenya), CARD MBA (Philippines) and Uplift Mutuals (India) were among those participating.

The events in Tanzania followed very shortly after a meeting of ICMIF’s Development Network in Nairobi, Kenya, where members were able to discuss in detail how ICMIF’s recently adopted strategies both for microinsurance development and for the Allnations loan fund will be carried forward and implemented.

It has happened more times than you might think — co-operatives were one of Mussolini’s first targets after the Fascist takeover of Italy. Nyere did it in Tanzania, though he later regretted it. It also happened in Malawi. But the country is fighting back with an emerging co-operative movement, and has some interesting lessons for anybody interested in how Africa can climb out of poverty.

TEACHERS from schools in the North West of England have returned to the UK after a visit to schools in Tanzania.

The trip - organised by United Co-operatives - was part of an innovative project to link six schools in Wigan, St Helens and Bolton with their counterparts in the town of Moshi which lies at the base of Kilimanjaro.

The three teachers who travelled to Moshi visited Wazalendo High School, which is associated with the Co-operative College in Tanzania, and with which it is hoped to form a lasting link.

Movement's next generation learning through Fairtrade

THE opening day of Fairtrade Fortnight saw links between the Co-operative and Fairtrade Movements strengthened with the official launch of a new, co-operative education project.
Young Co-operatives, which has been piloted in 20 schools across the UK, had its official launch at the House of Commons at an event hosted by Co-operative Party chair Gareth Thomas MP.
