A months-long discussion of employees unionizing at the Ashland Food Co-op has some workers eager for more say in forming the store's internal policies, but others see it an unnecessary and premature move.

Beginning their push to unionize, employees concerned over what they believed to be unfair treatment from management and some of the store's punishment policies approached the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union as early as last April.

Many of these veterans have been left with physical and mental disabilities from their wartime service — and, with too few transitional facilities, many end up on the street.

Parties up and down the country are calling for radical changes to current Government policy including an early military withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan; the scrapping of Britain’s nuclear deterrent; a freeze on the building of new nuclear power stations; an elected head of state and the phasing out of faith schools.

Other motions also reflect concerns over NHS Foundation Trusts; rising fuel prices and the future of Northern Rock, so delegates appear to be in for some lively sessions when the debates take place over the weekend of September 11th to 13th.

STEVE Hopper, a vehicle technician at Co-operative Group-owned Priory BMW in Wallsend, switched the garage for the battlefield to help his country fight the war in Iraq. Seven months on he's glad to be back fixing cars.
Steve (pictured) has been in the Territorial Army for 14 years and was called up within two months of war breaking out. He recalls: "Because of my background I was recruited to run a workshop in the port of Alzubair, repairing cars and tanks.

Travel sector bounces back

A SURGE in bookings is being celebrated by the Co-operative Movement's travel sector after months of travel scares which knocked consumer confidence.
Travel agents across the UK were dealt a blow after travel warnings were issued by various agencies urging people not to travel to certain areas during the war in Iraq, terrorism attacks in Bali and the spread of SARS virus.
Travel groups across the Movement have all been reporting high booking rates over the past month and also an increase in holidays booked for winter 2003/2004 and next summer too.
