La Junta de Andalucía se suma al Año Internacional de las Cooperativas

El texto, fruto de la decisión de la Asamblea General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas de declarar 2012 como Año Internacional de las Cooperativas, resalta que "Andalucía es una tierra de honda tradición cooperativista", ya que "más del 80 por ciento de los municipios andaluces cuentan, al menos, con una cooperativa o una sociedad laboral, la otra modalidad empresarial bajo la que se estructura la economía social".

"Estamos, por tanto, ante una fórmula de organización socioeconómica para el emprendimiento que genera empleo y riqueza y contribuye a la vertebración económica del territorio", subraya la Junta, que también resalta la "posición privilegiada" de Andalucía en este sector donde "ostenta el liderazgo nacional, tanto en el número de empresas como en el volumen de profesionales empleados", ya que "las 4.300 cooperativas andaluzas y los más de 55.000 trabajadores y trabajadoras suponen el 20 por ciento del conjunto nacional".

Junto a ello, el Gobierno andaluz señala que la evolución del concepto de cooperativa le ha llevado a "encarnar modelo empresarial altamente competitivo, repartido por núcleos rurales y grandes ciudades, dedicadas a materias agrícolas o ganaderas, así como a nuevos ámbitos como la consultoría, la tecnología, la I+D+i o el sector energético".

"Las cooperativas ofrecen tres grandes fortalezas en un contexto económico convulso como el actual: impulsan una distribución equitativa de la riqueza, otorgan una importancia decisiva al capital humano y poseen un carácter democrático tanto en la participación empresarial como en la toma de decisiones", añade la declaración, que destaca que "la experiencia andaluza ofrece un revulsivo para hacer frente a uno de los momentos económicos más duros de las últimas décadas".

Según la Junta, "es el momento de reivindicar las cooperativas como una fórmula de gestión empresarial de contrastada solvencia, que apuesta por el empleo estable y de calidad, por el desarrollo económico y profesional del entorno y de sus profesionales", para lo que propone "aprovechar el carácter simbólico de la celebración del Año Internacional de las Cooperativas y convertirlo en el momento oportuno para reforzar el fomento y la difusión de la Economía Social, por la innegable contribución que aportan sus empresas en valores, principios y actuaciones".

La Asamblea General de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas ha declarado 2012 como el Año Internacional de las Cooperativas. Bajo el lema "Las empresas cooperativas ayudan a crear un mundo mejor", la ONU se plantea, como objetivos para el año en curso, generar mayor conciencia sobre la contribución de las cooperativas al desarrollo económico y social; fomentar su constitución y crecimiento; y alentar a los gobiernos y reguladores para que adopten políticas adecuadas para su desarrollo.

Andalucía es una tierra de honda tradición cooperativista: más del 80% de los municipios andaluces cuentan, al menos, con una cooperativa o una sociedad laboral, la otra modalidad empresarial bajo la que se estructura la Economía Social. Estamos, por tanto, ante una fórmula de organización socioeconómica para el emprendimiento que genera empleo y riqueza y contribuye a la vertebración económica del territorio.

Andalucía desempeña una posición privilegiada porque ostenta el liderazgo nacional, tanto en el número de empresas como en el volumen de profesionales empleados. Las 4.300 cooperativas andaluzas y los más de 55.000 trabajadores y trabajadoras suponen el 20% del conjunto nacional. Dos datos relevantes a los que se suma un tercero: las más de 600.000 personas que están vinculadas, como socios y miembros, al movimiento cooperativista andaluz.

El concepto de cooperativa ha evolucionado sustancialmente. En estos momentos encarna un modelo empresarial altamente competitivo, repartidas por núcleos rurales y grandes ciudades, dedicadas a materias agrícolas o ganaderas, así como a nuevos ámbitos como la consultoría, la tecnología, la I+D+i o el sector energético. La nómina de los Premios Arco Iris del Cooperativismo, creados por la Junta de Andalucía en 1988, atestiguan esa diversidad.

Las cooperativas ofrecen tres grandes fortalezas en un contexto económico convulso como el actual: impulsan una distribución equitativa de la riqueza, otorgan una importancia decisiva al capital humano y poseen un carácter democrático tanto en la participación empresarial como en la toma de decisiones.

La experiencia andaluza, en este sentido, ofrece un revulsivo para hacer frente a uno de los momentos económicos más duros de las últimas décadas. Es el momento de aunar esfuerzos y de apostar por las personas: es, por tanto, el momento de reivindicar las cooperativas como una fórmula de gestión empresarial de contrastada solvencia, que apuesta por el empleo estable y de calidad, por el desarrollo económico y profesional del entorno y de sus profesionales. En esta apuesta por el cooperativismo, Andalucía quiere sumarse con esta declaración institucional a la celebración que impulsa Naciones Unidas.

Asimismo, debemos aprovechar el carácter simbólico de la celebración del Año Internacional de las Cooperativas y convertirlo en el momento oportuno para reforzar el fomento y la difusión de la Economía Social, por la innegable contribución que aportan sus empresas en valores, principios y actuaciones.

Tajani señaló que la Comisión Europea va a publicar un informe sobre la aplicación de la Sociedad Cooperativa Europea, que se presentará en dos conferencias durante 2012 en el marco del Año Internacional de las Cooperativas. La primera se va a organizar en abril, en coordinación con las organizaciones europeas de este sector, y la segunda en septiembre en el marco de la Presidencia de la UE de Chipre.

En cuanto a las mutualidades, Tajani confirmó que la Comisión ya está elaborando un estudio sobre esta forma de economía social, con el fin de plantear una posible propuesta de Estatuto Europeo de Mutualidades.

A estas iniciativas se suma la presentación, a principios del mes de febrero, de la propuesta de la Comisión Europea del Estatuto para la Fundación Europa, tal como Barnier había adelantado hace unos meses dentro del Acta del Mercado Único.

UK Government and Insurance Industry discuss Compensation Culture

The British Prime Minister recently met with representatives from the UK insurance industry, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and consumer and business groups to discuss the rising motor insurance premiums that many UK drivers are facing.

There was a commitment from the Prime Minister that the Government will take action to deal with what many view as a “compensation culture” in the UK, reduce legal costs and cut health and safety red tape. The insurance industry in return committed to pass any savings they made on to consumers and both parties agreed to work together in future on this.

Premiums in the UK have increased considerably over recent years and one of the reasons for this, many believe, is due to claims for whiplash injury and subsequent compensation payments. Britain has been dubbed ‘the whiplash capital of Europe” with claims rising by a third in the last three years. In the UK the price of an average motor insurance policy has increased by 17% on last year. For younger drivers, the costs are even higher.

ICMIF member Co-operative Insurance was invited to attend the meeting and was represented by Director of General Insurance, David Neave. One of the possible solutions discussed was the increased use of smartbox technology, such as telematics, for young drivers, to help bring down the price of their insurance premiums. This is something that Co-operative Insurance has offered to young drivers for some time with great success. Telematics require drivers to adopt a safer driving style, as it measures things like speed, braking and the types of roads used.

“This was an excellent opportunity for the UK insurance industry to highlight the key issues which it currently faces,” said David Neave.

“In particular, we’re pleased the government wanted to discuss the future role of telematics in reducing the cost of insurance, especially for young motorists,” he added.

The Co-operative is hopeful the insurance summit with Prime Minister David Cameron will also lead to stamping out fraudulent personal injury claims while continuing to settle genuine ones.

“We hope this meeting will have been key to cleaning up some of the less desirable practices that currently exist within the system,” he continued. “It should ultimately lead to an improvement in the UK’s record of exaggerated personal injury claims and allow us as an industry to strike the right balance between promoting easy access to compensation for genuine claimants while discouraging exaggerated or fraudulent claims.”

As you would expect, as I travel around around the globe, I do a lot of reflecting about our collective impact.

Insurers are in the business of giving customers peace of mind. So during these particularly difficult times of economic uncertainty, political unrest and catastrophic natural and manmade events how can our values-based movement play a more significant role?

Earlier this month, leading economist and author, Noreena Hertz spoke at the Ethical Plan re-launch for The Cooperative Group about a growing global rejection for what she calls ‘Gucci Capitalism’ ie the phenomenon where the poor go into devastating debt to emulate the lifestyles of the high profile elite.

The decline in the popularity of that trend, aligns with a heightening of consumer criticism about the fairness of the shareholder model which produces goods and services that make corporations the most profit at the expense, all too often, of the poor and vulnerable in our societies. People are seeking a different and ethical alternative to this, however, Noreena argues, that without very strong leadership and evidence to show people a different and better alternative they find it hard to move with confidence away from what they’ve always known.

So how can ICMIF members put our collective weight behind members and potential members who want an alternative? I believe it starts with a sector agreement that everybody, from the most senior board members to the vast talent that exists at all levels of our businesses, commits to lead by example and tell the world how we as a sector do things differently. And if some of us aren’t yet cooperating or collaborating with each other, we need to start to do this, even if it is just in a few small ways to begin with.

I mentioned in my previous post that I will soon be inviting some of your most senior communications chiefs from our global sector to join a Marketing and Communications Leaders Forum. I envisage that they will help coordinate our activities as you start to share stories with other members and world opinion formers, via ICMIF.

Our sector is responsible for 26% of the global insurance business. We must collaborate and work together to ensure that our voices are heard. Noreena talked recently about some of the movement’s leading global influencers and particularly praised our Quebec member Desjardins Group. This of course fills us with great pride, but we are also well aware of many other outstanding organisations in the ICMIF membership and we want to showcase these stories. So let’s get even better at telling others what gives us the competitive edge. Let’s share more stories, continue to collaborate and lead by example.

I have been asked to write some articles for global insurance publications during the next few months. The more you share with our members via this blog, the more I can share with the various opinion formers who are asking what we are doing within our sector.
