Mexico President Felipe Calderón has pledged his country's support to the co-operative business model and to celebrate the International Year of Co-operatives.

At the International Co-operative Alliance's Cancun General Assembly, the Mexican President said: "We share the values of co-operativism. Mutual help, fair employment, corporate social responsibility, sustainable human development, the participation of citizens and democracy."

Mr Calderón, who was elected to office in 2006, said "Mexico celebrates that the United Nations has declared 2012 the Year of Co-operatives. We will join the effort and see how we can raise the awareness among Mexicans.

"Mexico and my government is committed to promote the success of the International Year of Co-operatives."

He also told delegates that Mexico will actively participate in the International Year: "We will participate, not only with celebrations, which we will hold. But also with actions, positive actions and constructive actions."
