THE UK should be the world's first Fairtrade country according to a delegate to the Co-op Party conference. During a debate on how to promote Fairtrade products further, Peter Smith, from the Co-op Group Scottish Party, called for the UK to launch a Fairtrade status bid.

LEEDS Co-op's Farsley store's commitment to Fairtrade has landed the title of "Best Leeds Supermarket for Fairtrade". Leeds City Council made the award against strong competition from 40 other stores -including last year's winner, Leeds Co-op's Beeston store - which came a close second this time. "The Fairtrade range has gathered momentum each year," says Farsley manager Phil Scott, who has now moved to the society's Sherburn in Elmet store.

THE Co-operative Party put politics aside for a day and joined forces with other political parties in support of World Poverty Day on 24th April. The Make Poverty History campaign called on all political parties to say what they would do to help eradicate world poverty if elected.
