Global NewsThe Co-operative Bank Ethical Policy

It was in 1992 that The Co-operative Bank became the first UK high street bank to launch a customer-led Ethical Policy, kick-starting a unique approach to ethical screening based on the principle that it is our customers' money and they should have a say in what it should and should not finance. In total, we estimate that we have declined finance requests from such organisations totalling in excess of £1bn. At the same time, the Bank has remained committed to provide finance to those organisations that don't fall short of its ethical requirements. And against a backdrop of failing financial institutions, we remain independent and strong. www.goodwithmoney.co.uk

The UK's first community owned wind farm, Baywind Energy Co-operative was established in 1996. The project has always favoured local investors, that way the economic benefits of the wind farm are kept within the community it serves. In 1998 Baywind secured a loan from The Co-operative Bank to purchase two turbines for their Harlock Hill site. It has also received several grants from The Co-operative Enterprise Hub to develop new, co-operatively owned wind farms across the UK. Baywind now typically generates around 10000MWh of electricity each year -- enough to power around 30000 homes. And along with educational visits throughout the year, it funds environmental books for local schools. To find out more visit: www.co-operative.coop
