Leading into the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives, Co-operatives Australia has released its third list of Australia's Top Co-operatives, Credit Unions and Mutuals. The two previous lists were released in 2009 (June) and 2010 (September). The third list has been expanded to include not only turnover figures for Australia but also includes State and industry analysis for turnover, members and employees.
The Association of British Credit Unions has welcomed the Governmentâ€™s announcement that it is investing up to Â£73 million in credit unions and that the Post Office could play a central role in delivering credit union services.
On behalf of Australia's International Year of Co-operatives Steering Committee, Social Business Australia has distributed a National Call To Action information pack to about 2500 credit unions and mutuals throughout Australia.
Co-operatives Australia has published a 2nd top 100 list of co-operatives, credit unions and mutuals by annual turnover. Industries represented in the top 100 list include agriculture, financial services, insurance and retailing. The list demonstrates the economic and social impact of social businesses in Australia - part of a fourth sector which generates in excess of $14.5 billion in turnover in a year.
