It takes some seniors to raise a Village - Muscatine Journal (Iowa)

Every day from her desk at work, Sarah Stineman can gaze out her window across Cobblestone Drive and see bright wildflowers now in full bloom.

By next year she hopes to be able to see, out that same window, the beginnings of the $8 million, 44-unit Village Cooperative of Muscatine.

The cooperative will be constructed if and when 26 of the 44 units are pre-sold.

Stineman, 37, of Muscatine, is sales coordinator for the planned cooperative, a privately funded venture that’s being marketed for people 55 and older.

The Village Cooperative of Muscatine is not related to an affordable housing proposal presented to the Muscatine City Council last week by a Chicago developer. That proposal has not yet received city approval.

Cooperatives are popular in large cities, such as New York City, but are not nearly as common in Midwestern cities. The nearest one to Muscatine, Stineman said, is in Dubuque.
