The Global News Hub, which will be at www.thenews.coop, will provide a platform with content written by co-ops to showcase their successes and initiatives throughout, and beyond, the United Nations’ International Year of Co-operatives in 2012.
Individual co-operators will also be invited to take part in the new-look website — which is being launched to coincide with the 140th anniversary of the first edition of Co-operative News in 1871 on September 2nd — by writing blogs, commenting on articles or engaging through social networks.
The website will be multi-lingual and will automatically personalise news and features for the user based on their country or region and, by using the latest technology, content will be automatically organised by organisation name, people and sector.
The International Co-operative Alliance is a partner in the project, which is providing support through its global network and news feeds from the site will also be published on the ICA’s official website for the International Year at www.2012.coop, which is due to launch in the autumn.
Anthony Murray, Online Editor of thenews.coop, said: “Co-operative News is excited to be collaborating with the ICA on the Global News Hub and we are proud to work with co-operatives on a global scale to help give our sector a stronger voice. The mission of the Global News Hub is to promote co-operative enterprise, while co-operators from around the world can also engage with each other to discuss initiatives and ideas of interest to the Movement.”
Charles Gould, Director-General of the ICA, added: “We’re delighted that contemporaneous news provided by the Global News Hub will feature so prominently in the ICA International Year of Co-operatives website, 2012.coop, when it launches in the autumn. This exciting initiative by Co-operative Press begins a new era for both organisations as we seek new ways to communicate the co-operative message to a global audience.”
