Co-operative News is supporting the I'm Open campaign with Co-operatives UK and Open Data Manchester. By opening data co-operatives can be more competitive, transparent and much more easily show its co-operative difference.

The views from the top of Manchester's Co-operative Insurance Tower were awe-inspiringly massive; a perfect scene to tackle the massive picture of opening data for co-operatives. The first attempt collectively by a group of businesses to be more transparent.
Guest speaker Chris Taggart from
OpenCorporates showed what can be done. In four years Chris has created a database of 43 million companies from around the world; if co-operatives can add to this data this will empower users and communities. Chris said that while the amount of open data is increasing; it is worrying that the amount of private/propriety data in climbing at a much faster rate.
"Data can be incredibly powerful but it's only powerful if you can access it and take control of it"
