With more than 40 years of dedication to co-operative housing, the chair of CDS Co-operatives has received a lifetime achievement award.

Maureen Stables, from the tenant and housing co-op services provider, received the recognition at the Housing Hero Awards in Manchester. Hosted by Nick Hewer, the former business adviser on the Apprentice, the ceremony hosted a range of awards for housing providers across the country.

The lifetime achievement award recognised Ms Stables as one of the ‘unsung heroes’ of the housing world who has shown commitment to the housing sector.  Shortlisted from 200 entries, the award acknowledges the contribution Maureen has made to both CDS Co-operatives and to the national UK housing co-operative sector over many years.

For Maureen the democratic involvement in co-operative housing is right at the heart of creating sustainable communities where people are making their own active contributions and creating better outcomes for the whole of their community.

She said: “I am pleased that co-operative housing has been recognised as a force for good and I want to share this award with present and past members of the staff and board.”

Linda Wallace, chief executive of CDS, added: “Maureen is, as ever, generous and incredibly humble – but everyone who has had the privilege to work with her knows how very well deserved this award is.  We are absolutely delighted and proud beyond words of our amazing Chair, her huge co-operative heart and her immense achievement.”

CDS Co-operatives is celebrating its 40th anniversary year and is the largest housing co-operative service agency in London and the south east of England, providing housing management services to over 3,000 tenants and working with 50 client co-operatives and other forms of tenant controlled housing.
