Co-operative Group food stores on the Isle of Man and in Northern Ireland are to stock a new range of longer-life reusable carrier bags, which will help the environment and raise bags of cash for good causes.

An estimated 70% of coastal plastic waste is from carrier bags, and the Group hopes the move will help reduce the number of plastic carrier bags in circulation.

From today mid-January, all the profits from sales of the Co-op’s reusable bags will be reinvested in the local area, by being donated to good causes.

This includes the sale of large and small woven reusable bags and new fold-away bags (all available for £1 each), as well as its redesigned 10p bag for life.

The Co-operative Food has 10 stores on the Isle of Man. Andrew Corrie, The Co-operative Food’s Operations Manager for the island, said: “We have a strong commitment to the environment […] Together we can reduce, reuse, recycle, and also reinvest, in the island.”

In Northern Island, where there are over 30 Co-operative Group food stores, the 5p levy on single-use bags has also been extended to include all bags which retail at less than 20p, in a move designed to protect the environment by further reducing the number of plastic bags in circulation.
