An independent rating agency for agricultural co-operatives is to to be launched by Momagri, a think tank working on world agricultural organisation, to monitor agricultural markets and policies.

Founded by Limagrain, La Coop Fédérée, Euralis, Union In Vivo, FNPSMS and Crédit Agricole, among others, the Momagri Agency will also develop a series of assessment indicators to improve decision making.

Details of the agency’s work were unveiled at the International Summit of Cooperatives, where leaders of Limagrain and La Coop Fédérée presented a paper titled Improving our Understanding of Markets and the Readability of Agricultural Strategies, and gave a preview of the agency’s objectives.

Using analysis of agricultural market instability, food security and public agricultural strategies, the agency plans to develop the analysis of markets and agricultural policies. It also aims to improve the understanding of global agricultural challenges and international co-operation between all agricultural activities worldwide.

The Momagri Agency has already given priority to two subject matters – comparing public agricultural policies and agricultural and food security – and developed two corresponding indicators.

The Global Support to Agricultural and Food Production (SGPAA) Indicator, the presentation said, will develop “an improved overview of international agricultural strategies” by assessing the public support granted to the sector by each nation.

This is made possible through an international standardisation of budget reporting, and will allow a ready comparison of agricultural policies and the identification of support features that are unique to each country.

The Food Solvability Indicator (ISA) will assess the capability of countries to achieve optimum food security, according to its economic and agricultural situation, while also taking into account education and local legislation.
