Tamworth Co-operative is set to open a convenience store by the end of the year. The society, which has a turnover of more than £20m, plans to open its 14th shop in Dosthill.

The store will stock a wide range of fresh food products and will have its own 22-bay parking area for customers. “We believe this will be a superb new facility for Dosthill people,” said chief executive Julian Coles. The new venture will provide up to 20 new jobs for the local community.

“This development also shows that we are not standing still as a business. We are always prepared to invest in this area when we spot opportunities which also benefit the local community.”

Tamworth Co-op was set up in 1886 to fight against poverty and the greed of wealthy shop keepers that were making huge profits on basic products such as meat.

Along with its founder, reverend William MacGregor, the co-operative and has become a symbol of the town. From a simple terraced cottage in Church Street, the society has grown into a business with over 17,000 members and 23 ventures that stretch beyond the town itself. While food account for 80% of its turnover, the co-op also runs department stores, funeral businesses and a car service centre.
