Faitrade International is inviting nominations for the first ever Fairtrade Awards for Producers. The organisation, which works to secure better deals for farmers and workers, will be recognising the outstanding Fairtrade organisations and producers at a ceremony due to take place at its general assembly in Bonn this June.

Producers can nominate themselves or someone else in four categories: small producer organisation of the year, workers’ premium committee of the year, Fairtrade trader award and fairest Fairtrade award.

The small producer organisation of the year award will go to three small producer organisations across three regions: Asia; Africa and the Middle East; and Latin America and Caribbean.

Outstanding producer organisations could also be recognised in the Fairtrade premium committee of the year, which aims to highlight innovation within the sector. For this category Fairtrade International will select one winner from each region (Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and Latin America and Caribbean).  These could include co-operatives.

The awards will also be celebrating the outstanding individuals from within the international fairtrade system such as staff members from Fairtrade International, FLOCERT, national fairtrade organisations, producer networks, auditors, liaison officers or fairtrade marketing organisations and campaigners. The winners in these categories will receive an iPad, a certificate and a featured story on Fairtrade International’s website.

Also recognised at the ceremony will be outstanding Fairtrade traders. The winner in this category will receive a certificate and a featured story on Fairtrade International’s website.

Harriet Lamb, chief executive of Fairtrade International, said: “It is always inspiring to hear about those, in worker committees or smallholder organisations or traders who go the extra mile and achieve outstanding results in Fairtrade. We are excited to launch the first Fairtrade Awards to recognise and celebrate these achievements and encourage best practice.”

• Nominations are accepted online until 30 April, for more details visit: http://www.fairtrade.net/fairtrade-awards.html
