In an annual survey, thousands of British consumers alongside marketing and business experts judge the UK's strongest brands and have rated co-operatives to join big brands such as Apple, British Airways, Google and Visa.

The Co-operative brand of retail stores, rolled out by the Co-operative Group and adopted by other societies, is positioned alongside other major supermarket brands such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's in the Top 500 consumer brands. Employee-owned retailer John Lewis, and its Waitrose supermarket, have also been named in the survey.

While, the Co-operative Bank and Co-operatives UK have been listed in the top 500 Business Superbrands, which recognises an organisation that has established the finest reputation in its field. And "offers customers significant emotional and/or tangible advantages over its competitors, which customers want and recognise".

Independently administered by The Centre for Brand Analysis, which draws on a variety of sources, from sector reports and blogs to public nominations a shortlist of 1,100 organisations was created from thousands of considered brands.

Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK, said: “I am delighted that Co-operatives UK has been recognised for its value as one of the top 500 business superbrands.

“Our purpose is to promote, develop and unite the co-operative economy. This is an indication that the whole of the co-operative movement has raised its profile, in part through the success of our high profile campaigns such as Co-operatives Fortnight.

“The size of the co-operative economy has grown by more than 25% in the last five years and co-operatives are seeing a resurgence because people can trust them.”
