IOWA CITY, IA – October 16, 2012 – Today in honor of World Food Day, National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA) is pleased to announce it has exceeded its goal of raising $100,000 to be donated to national nonprofit Share Our Strength in support of the organization’s No Kid Hungry® campaign. The No Kid Hungry campaign is ending childhood hunger in America by connecting kids to the healthy food they need, every day. NCGA joined the campaign and has raised $106,500 by working with member co-ops, consumers and other partner brands, including: Alaffia, Alter Eco, Divine, Dr. Bronner’s, Equal Exchange, Frontier, Nutiva, Once Again, Organic Valley and Shady Maple Farms.

“One in five kids struggle with hunger in the United States – that’s nearly 16 million children. Solving a problem of this magnitude can only happen if we work together,” said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA. “We are humbled to be part of a passionate community of vendors, food co-ops and shoppers, a group that has contributed $106,500 to help end childhood hunger.”

This initiative brought together three events that highlight NCGA and its member co-ops as they work to address the growing problem of childhood hunger: October as national Co-op Month, World Food Day on October 16, and 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, as declared by the United Nations in recognition of the tangible economic and social contributions made by cooperative businesses.
